Here are published the account books for the history of the building and decoration of the Cappella Bernabò in the church of San Giovanni Crisostomo in Venice, 1499-1507. The documents are accompanied by indices, a glossary, and appendices, the latter clarifying the financial aspects of the documents. The two account books offer the sole testimony for the reconstruction of the church of San Giovanni Cristomo in the years around 1500. In the wider context of Venice and of developments at the turn of the century, these documents offer an unusually complete picture of a single architectural and sculptural project, and, in particular, of the financial operation of the ‘fabbrica’ and of the structure of the ‘cantiere’. |
