The Introduction presents essential information about Giovanni Aubrey Bezzi’s translation of Vasari’s Life of Fra Angelico, published for the Arundel Society in London in 1850. Among the topics treated are the translator, Giovanni Bezzi, his collaborators, the institutional circumstances in which the book was produced, as well as Bezzi’s translation as a translation, and his commentaries to the Fra Angelico vita and their sources in prior editions of Vasari and contemporary art historical literature. Bezzi’s catalogue of works by Angelico and the lithographic plates are described. The use of Bezzi’s translation as the medium for an artist monograph is considered in the context of the history and pre-history of this genre of art historical writing. A selection from the numerous plates included in the volume follows the full-text edition of Bezzi’s book. Full-text editions of the first and second editions of Vasari’s Life of Fra Angelico (1550, 1568) are included, as well as a comparative analysis of the two redactions. The characteristics of the 1568 revision are defined and interpreted. There follows a discussion of Mrs. Jonathan Foster’s translation of Vasari’s vita of Frau Angelico. This was published in London contemporaneously with Bezzi’s translation in the same year, 1850, or possibly just slightly later than Bezzi’s edition. A full text of Mrs. Foster’s translation is included. | ||

Es folgt eine Diskussion über Mrs. Jonathan Fosters Übersetzung von Vasaris Angelico-Leben.
