Das besondere Titelblatt, das Goltzius für dieses Werk entworfen und gestochen hat und das sich stilistisch von den Frontispizen seiner früheren Werke unterscheidet, begleitet und erläutert ein kunstreiches Gedicht des Franciscus Modius. Das Gedicht wird von Gregor Maurach ins Deutsche übersetzt, kommentiert und mit einer Würdigung versehen. Claudia Echinger-Maurach gibt in einem ersten Abschnitt einen Überblick über das bewegte Leben und die vielfältigen Publikationen des Franciscus Modius und analysiert abschließend das Frontispiz hinsichtlich seines Stils und seiner künstlerischen Vorbilder. Bezüglich der Frontispize der früheren Publikationen des Goltzius sei auf die Einleitung (in englischer Sprache) von Margaret Daly Davis zum ersten Werk (Fontes 86) hingewiesen, wo sie die vielfältigen Inhalte der Bücher sowie die Zielsetzungen und Methoden des Künstlers/Autors Hubertus Goltzius als Antiquar, Numismatiker und Historiker beleuchtet. The subject of Fontes 92 is the frontispiece designed by Hubert Goltzius, which differs stylistically from his former frontispieces. An artistic poem by Franciscus Modius accompanies and elucidates it. This text has been translated into German, commented and furnished with an appraisal by Gregor Maurach. Claudia Echinger-Maurach gives an introduction into Franciscus Modius’ life and numerous publications and concludes with an analysis of Goltzius’ title page in the light of its artistic models. For further information on Goltzius see Fontes 86, where Margaret Daly Davis has published an introduction in English to the first work by Hubert Goltzius. Therein, she throws light on the manifold contents of his publications from 1563, 1566 and 1574 as well as on the aims and methods of the artist/author in his singular function as antiquarian, numismatist and historian. |
